Why it grows
Why moss grows on Irish roofs
Damp weather, shade, trees and north-facing slopes (RoofQuote.ie). Older, porous tiles hold moisture and moss more than smooth modern ones (HP Roofing). It holds water against the tiles, blocks gutters and slows drainage. Moss itself rarely causes a leak, but constant damp speeds up wear on tiles and mortar.
How it comes off
Three steps, in order
- Scrape: by hand, working down the roof, the gentlest method on natural slate (HP Roofing).
- Soft wash: biocide at low pressure to kill what's left at the root.
- Treat: a biocide left on the roof to slow regrowth.
Worth it?
When it's worth doing
HP Roofing's view: worth it if the roof is sound and the moss is causing damp, blocked gutters or slipping tiles; think twice on a roof 30 or 40 years old and near replacement. Cleaning doesn't fix leaks, worn slates or failed flashings.

FAQ
